The voice of one who cries, Prepare you in the wilderness the way of Yahweh; make level in the desert a highway for our God. — Isaiah 40:3, World English

“Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before [in the face of] me; and the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, behold, he comes!” says Yahweh of hosts. — Malachi 3:1, World English

The two prophecies above speak of John the Baptist and his work. Many, in seeing the application of John the Baptist as being the forerunner of Jesus, have thought that these scriptures offer proof that Jesus is Yahweh. This idea, however, is due, in part, to a misreading of what these scriptures are actually saying. We will consider the scriptures in the NT that apply the above two scriptures to John the Baptist and his work.

In Malachi 3, two messengers are referred to. The first is the messenger who goes before Yahweh, and then there is the other messenger, spoken of as the “messenger of the covenant. The Hebrew translated “messenger” in both instances is malak, angel. Neither of these are of the order of spirit beings that are normally referred to as “angels”, but both are messengers for Yahweh. The Lord (adon) whom Israel was seeking was the Messiah, who came suddenly to his temple. He came unexpectedly to test and prove Israel as a people, and as such he came to the temple in Jerusalem, but more specifically, Jesus came to his temple, his church, which has been given to him by his God. — Ephesians 2:20-22; John 6:37,39; 10:29.

Matthew 3:1-3

In those days, John the Baptizer came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!” For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ready the way of Yahweh, Make his paths straight.” — Holy Name supplied.

Like most quotations of the Old Testament in the New Testament, this is not a direct quote, but an indirect quote. The phrase “in the wilderness” is removed from the comand to the people and applied directly to the one who is delivering the message.

It should be clear here that the one crying in the wilderness is John the Baptizer. He, in effect, tells the people: “Make ready the way of Yahweh, Make his paths straight.” The method by which John the Baptist tells the people this message is by his preaching to the people: “Repent, for the Kingdom of the Heaven is at hand!” (Matthew 3:1-3; see also Acts 20:21, which shows that repentance is toward God.) In other words, ‘The Royal Majesty from heaven is at hand!’ Thus the method in which the people make ready the way of Yahweh, and make his paths straight is through repentance toward Yahweh, in preparation for the one coming in Yahweh’s name, the one who spoke for Yahweh, the one appointed as King by Yahweh. — Deuteronomy 18:15-19; Psalm 2:2,6; 45:6,7; 110:1,2; Isaiah 9:6,7; 61:1; Daniel 7:13,14; Matthew 21:9; 23:39; 28:18; Luke 24:19; John 4:25; 5:43; 8:28; 10:25; 12:49,50; Acts 2:34-36; 3:17-26; 5:30,31; Ephesians 1:22; Philippians 2:9-11; Hebrews 1:2,9; 3:1,2.

Some often refer to the verse in Isaiah 40:3 as though the message to prepare the way was actually addressed to John the Baptist, rather than being the words attributed to John the Baptist which are addressed to the people. Thus some would read the prophesy as an address to John the Baptist to prepare the way of Yahweh, who they claim to be Jesus. In reality, in Isaiah, the messenger [John] directs the message to the people of Israel. (Isaiah 40:3, Malachi 3:1 — see also Genesis 18:19; Proverbs 10:29; Jeremiah 5:4,5) The command given to prepare the way is not to one person, as John the Baptist, but the Hebrew is in the plural, not singular. Thus in Matthew 3, the “one” before foretold is John the Baptist, who is the one in the wilderness who declares a message to the people: “Prepare the way before Yahweh”, which was a message to the people of repentance toward Yahweh.

Of course, Jesus is the representative of Yahweh, and John did come before Jesus, and did, by means of preaching repentance toward Yahweh, prepare the people to receive Jesus, not as Yahweh the Almighty, but the Anointed One of Yahweh the Almighty, the one whom Yahweh. sent to speak his words in his name. — Deuteronomy 18:15-20; Isaiah 61:1; Luke 1:32; John 3:16,17; 17:1,3.

Thus, by telling the people to prepare the way of Yahweh by means of repentance toward Yahweh, a way was also being prepared for Jesus, the representative of Yahweh. It could be said that John, in making the way, so to speak, for Jesus, was also preparing the way for the one who sent Jesus. The Messiah was sent by Yahweh as the representative of Yahweh. Those who received him received Yahweh also, just as any who receives a true disciple of Christ, also receives Christ. — Matthew 21:9; 23:39; Mark 9:37; Luke 2:26; 9:20,48; John 3:17; 4:34; 5:24,30,36-38; 6:29,38-44,57; 7:16,18,28,29,33; 8:16,26,29,42; 9:4; 10:36; 11:42; 12:44-49; 13:20; 17:1,3; Hebrews 1:9.

One would have to read into the verse that Jesus is Yahweh.

Matthew 11:9,10

But why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet. For this is he, of whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before [in the sight of] you.’

Jesus quotes indirectly from Malachi 3:1, and rewords the prophecy. Jesus is speaking to the multitudes of Jews concerning John the Baptist. In verse 9, he uses the plural “you” in address of his audience; the same is done verse 11. However, in the reference to the prophecy of Malachi he uses the singular “your” and “you”. It is possible that by “your face” and “your way before you”, he is referring to Israel as a whole, and as represented by the multitude whom he was addressing. If so, then Yahweh speaks of sending his messenger (John) to prepare the face and way of Israel in the sight of Israel.

Most commentators present the idea that “your way” and “your face” refers to Christ’s face and Christ’s way. In context, however, “your” appears to be referring to those to whom the messenger is sent to, that is, Israel. However, if applied to Yahweh, that is, the way of Yahweh, it would mean that John the Baptist was sent to preach repentance toward Yahweh to the people, as in the other verses. Nevertheless, even if applied to “Christ’s way” the idea that this would mean that Jesus is Yahweh would have to be read into the verse, for the application of the scripture could be applied to Jesus as Yahweh’s representative, as we will see below.

The fact that a prophecy spoken of Yahweh is fulfilled in one who is the representative of Yahweh is not a new thing. Yahweh says in Exodus 3:8: “I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey.” Yahweh himself says that he himself had come down to deliver Israel, but note what is said later to Moses: “Come now therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh, that you may bring forth my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.” (Exodus 3:10) Although Moses is used by Yahweh to fulfill the earlier statement, it is apparent that Moses is not Yahweh who sent him. Likewise, with our Lord Jesus: it should be apparent that it is Yahweh who sent Jesus to represent and speak for him, and thus that Jesus is not Yahweh who sent him. — Deuteronomy 18:15,18; Matthew 23:39; Mark 11:9,10; Luke 13:35; John 3:2,17; 5:19,43; 6:57; 7:16,28; 8:26,28,38; 10:25; 12:49,50; 14:10; 15:15; 17:8,26; Hebrews 1:1,2; Revelation 1:1.

Mark 1:2-5

As it is written in the prophets, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, Who will prepare your way before you. 3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of Yahweh! Make his paths straight!’” 4 John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching the baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins. 5 There went out to him all the country of Judea, and all those of Jerusalem. They were baptized by him in the Jordan river, confessing their sins. — Divine name supplied.

Both prophecies are referred to here. Again, it is evident that Mark is making an indirect quotation and rewords the prophecies. Malachi 3:1 is quoted similarly to the same way is quoted in Matthew 11:9,10, which see above. Jesus is the representative of Yahweh, the messenger of the covenant, and also was sent by Yahweh. He is not Yahweh who sent him.

It was the through the repentance, or the transmentation, of the people that Isaiah 40:3 was being fulfilled. Verse two shows this, in that the messenger directs the message to the people of Israel, who needed to repent before Yahweh. And thereby the people, through their repentance toward God, did prepare the way of Yahweh by making themselves a prepared people before their Messiah (anointed of Yah) was made known to them. — Acts 20:21.

Please note that it is not only John, who is the messenger to the people, but more importantly the people who prepare the way of Yahweh by means of their repentance. John’s mission was pre-eminently that of a reprover and reformer, telling the people to prepare the way of Yahweh through repentance toward Yahweh symbolized through water baptism.

See Matthew 3:1-3 and Matthew 11:9,10 above.

Luke 1:1-4

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness. He came into all the region around the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance to remission of sins. As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of Yahweh. Make his paths straight.”

This is also another indirect quote of Isaiah 40:3. See Matthew 3:1-3 above.

Luke 1:15-17

For he will be great in the sight of Yahweh, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. He will turn many of the children of Israel to Yahweh, their God. He will go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for Yahweh.”

Here John is said to make ready a people for Yahweh. This he did by his preaching of repentance toward Yahweh.

See Matthew 3:1-3 above.

Luke 1:76,77

And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High, For you will go before the face of Yahweh to make ready his ways, To give knowledge of salvation to his people by the remission of their sins.

See Matthew 3:1-3 above.

Luke 7:26,27

But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, Who will prepare your way before you.’

See Matthew 3:1-3 and Matthew 11:9,10 above.

John 1:23

He [John the Baptizer] said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of Yahweh,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

The same applies here as to the verses already discussed above.

The above examination shows that there is nothing in any of these verses that should lead us to believe that Jesus is Yahweh.

Some Related Writings – We do not necessarily agree with all conclusions presented by these authors.

Matthew quotes Isaiah… Read [...]

“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son. They shall call his name Immanuel;” which is, being interpreted, “God with us.” — Matthew 1:23, World English Bible version

Matthew quotes Isaiah and states that Jesus would be called “Immanuel”, “God with us”. (Matthew 1:23; Isaiah 7:14; 8:8) But is this supposed to mean that Jesus is Yahweh? Such is reading into this an extra-Biblical concept. It is doubtful that anyone would even think such a thing from this titular name if it were not for a prevailing theory that Jesus was actually an incarnation of Yahweh himself. The scripture does not say, as many would wish it to say, that Jesus is God with us; rather it says “they shall call his name Immanuel, which is, being interpreted, ‘God with us.’ ” We should note that the Messiah’s personal name as given to him by his Father is “Jesus” (Yahshua), not Immanuel. Immanuel is a titular “name,” not his personal name. The name “Immanuel” is to be understood in the light of Acts 10:38; “How God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” The scripture does not say that Jesus was God Almighty in the flesh, but that God Almighty was with Jesus, thus “God” who was with Jesus is being spoken of as one person; Jesus is not God Almighty who was with him.

If one chooses to use the logic of those wish to read the scripture as saying that Jesus was God Almighty in the flesh, then consider the name “Jehu”. In Hebrew, this name means “He is Yah” or “Yah is He.” Does that mean the man Jehu is, in reality, Yahweh? Likewise with the name Eliathath, which means “God has come”. Are we to think that Eliathath is God Almighty because of the name given to him? Other names could also be cited that could be interpreted in some manner that would make the bearer of the name Yahweh, if one were follow the same logic as many would apply to Matthew 1:23.

God, being with Jesus, is with his people through Jesus. Having the titular name Immanuel, signifying that God is with his people, does not mean that Jesus is God Almighty.

By this titular name Jesus’ office as Yahweh’s representative is indicated — Jesus comes in the name of and speaks on behalf of his God, Yahweh (Deuteronomy 18:15-19; Matthew 23:39; Mark 11:9,10; Luke 13:35; John 3:2,17,32-35; 4:34; 5:19,30,36,43; 6:57; 7:16,28; 8:26,28,38; 10:25; 12:49,50; 14:10; 15:15; 17:8,26; 20:17; Acts 2:22,34-36; Romans 15:6; 2 Corinthians 1:3; 8:6; 11:31; Colossians 1:3,15; 2:9-12; Hebrews 1:1-3; Revelation 1:1); this view is corroborated absolutely by the Apostle Paul, who after quoting from this prophecy and pointing to its fulfilment in the destroying of Adamic death during the Millennium says — “Thanks be unto God who giveth us the victory [deliverance -- triumph] through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:57) As such a representative Jesus is the proof that God is on our side, that God will deliver his church and that God will deliver the world of mankind by him.

The following scriptures, taken from the King James Version of the Bible, give examples of this usage (Divine Name, Yahweh, supplied by us at the appropriate places where it appears in the Hebrew):

Exodus 10:10: And he said unto them, Let [Yahweh] be so with you, as I will let you go, and your little ones: look to it; for evil is before you.

Deuteronomy 20:4 For [Yahweh] your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

Numbers 14:9: Only rebel not ye against [Yahweh], neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and [Yahweh] is with us: fear them not.

Numbers 14:43: For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from [Yahweh], therefore [Yahweh] will not be with you.

Judges 6:13: And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if [Yahweh] be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not [Yahweh] bring us up from Egypt? but now [Yahweh] hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.

Ruth 2:4: And, behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said unto the reapers, [Yahweh] be with you. And they answered him, [Yahweh] bless thee.

1 Chronicles 22:17,18: David also commanded all the princes of Israel to help Solomon his son, saying, Is not [Yahweh] your God with you? and hath he not given you rest on every side? for he hath given the inhabitants of the land into mine hand; and the land is subdued before [Yahweh], and before his people.

2 Chronicles 13:12: And, behold, God himself is with us for our captain, and his priests with sounding trumpets to cry alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against the [Yahweh] God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.

2 Chronicles 15:2: And he went out to meet Asa, and said unto him, Hear ye me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin; [Yahweh] is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you.

2 Chronicles 20:17: Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of [Yahweh] with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for [Yahweh] will be with you.

2 Chronicles 32:8: With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is [Yahweh] our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

2 Kings 8:57: [Yahweh] our God be with us, as he was with our fathers: let him not leave us, nor forsake us:

Isaiah 8:10: Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.

Psalm 46:7: [Yahweh] of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

Psalm 46:11: [Yahweh] of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

Jeremiah 42:11: Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid; be not afraid of him, saith [Yahweh]: for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand.

Amos 5:14: Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so [Yahweh], the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.

Haggai 1:13: Then spake Haggai [Yahweh]’s messenger in [Yahweh]’s message unto the people, saying, I am with you, saith [Yahweh].

Haggai 2:4: Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith [Yahweh]; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith [Yahweh], and work: for I am with you, saith [Yahweh] of hosts:

Philippians 4:9: Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

2 Thessalonians 3:16: Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.

The following are the words of P. L. Read, taken from Herald of Christ’s Presence, November/December, 1997
http://www.heraldmag.org/97nd_9.htm – words in brackets are added by us.

This is the great message of the New Testament to the church, and eventually to the world: Emmanuel, God with us. God was with his ancient people, and spoke to them often and unmistakably by the mouth of his angels and his prophets. He was there in the burning bush, in the Shekinah of the tabernacle, and in the pillar of cloud and fire, as well as in the angel of Jehovah, whom many believe was the pre-human Logos. But he came into new and closer relationship when he sent his Son, and when the mighty Logos became flesh. Jesus Christ was “God made manifest in the flesh (1 Tim. 3:16); he was so true and accurate a manifestation of God, so at one with the Father (in purpose and in spirit-not in person [or being]) that he could truthfully say, “He that hath seen me hath seen the Father” (John 14:9). This was a fulfillment of the prophecy, “God with us,” indeed-it was the fulfillment before which the earlier one fades into relative insignificance.

“God is with us” in the life of the church, for Jesus laid its foundations in his blood, and became himself its cornerstone, and the bishop of our souls. “God is with us” in our personal experiences, or Christ Jesus is our brother and Savior, our refuge under the consciousness of sin, our strength in temptation, a very present help in trouble. Therefore with the psalmist we say, “We will not fear,” whatever may be our present lot, and whatever may befall us. “God is with us” under our present burden and in the unknown events of the future. “God is with us” in life, in death, in time, and in eternity.

God is with us as represented in Jesus just as God was with the faithful ones of old.

Something else we might note is that Isaiah’s prophecy probably had its first fulfillment in one of Isaiah’s sons, and, of course, Isaiah’s son was not Yahweh. Note the following:

In the Old Testament God’s presence with his people Israel was particularly evident in the tabernacle (Exod 25:8), but the glory that filled the tabernacle was surpassed by the personal presence of God the Son as he revealed the Father during his ministry on earth. Christ’s glory was revealed through the miracles he performed (John 2:11).

The birth of Immanuel to the virgin Mary fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah 7:14, the sign given to Ahaz about seven hundred years earlier. At that time the wicked Ahaz ignored Isaiah’s advice and appealed to the king of Assyria for help in a political crisis. Both the context of Isaiah 7 and the use of “Immanuel” two more times in chapter 8 (vv. 8, 10) raise the distinct possibility that the sign had a near fulfillment that affected Ahaz directly. Such a possibility is supported by the two verses immediately after 7:14 that tell us that the boy will still be young when Ahaz’s enemies-the kings of Samaria and Damascus-will lose their power (a prediction fulfilled in 732 b.c.). The birth of a boy who would serve as a sign to Ahaz appears to be closely linked to the birth of Isaiah’s son Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz in 8:1-4. Both Immanuel in 7:15-16 and Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz in 8:4 are young children when Damascus and Samaria collapse. And in 8:8 the two boys may be identified as Isaiah addresses Immanuel as if he were already present in Jerusalem. Verse 10 contains another occurrence of “Immanuel” in the words “God is with us.” The prophet was challenging Ahaz to trust God, who was “with” his people just as he had promised to be with them constantly. In Numbers 14:9 Joshua and Caleb had urged the Israelites to acknowledge that the Lord was with them and to begin the conquest of Canaan, but just like Ahaz the people chose the path of unbelief with its tragic consequences. An earlier king of Judah, Abijah, believed that God was with his people as they faced the numerically superior army of Jeroboam. Abijah’s faith was honored as the Lord gave him a resounding victory (2 Chron 13:12-15). — Elwell, Walter A. “Entry for ‘Immanuel’”. “Evangelical Dictionary of Theology”.

If “Immanuel” was another name for Isaiah’s son, the use of “virgin” for Isaiah’s wife refers to the time when she was his fiance. The sign of Isaiah 7:14 constitutes a blessing on an upcoming marriage, predicting that a virgin who was engaged to be married would be able to have a child early in the marriage. Unlike Mary she was not a virgin after she became pregnant. It is likely that Isaiah’s marriage to a prophetess is in fact briefly described in 8:1-3. Matthew’s use of this verse was extraordinarily appropriate in light of Mary’s unique virginity and the incarnation of Jesus, who was God in the flesh. Matthew ends his Gospel with Jesus’ own assurance to his disciples that he was Immanuel: “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (28:20).
Elwell, Walter A. “Entry for ‘Immanuel’”. “Evangelical Dictionary of Theology”. http://www.biblestudytools.net/Dictionaries/BakerEvangelicalDictionary/bed.cgi?number=T366.

Of course, we do not agree with the above that describes Jesus as “God the Son”, but we quote this only to show that the name Immanuel does not necessarily mean that the bearer of the name is God Almighty. There is therefore no reason to believe that the titular name, Immanuel, meaning “God with us,” should be understood to mean that Jesus is God Almighty.

Matthew 12:38 Then certain of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”
Matthew 12:39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and there will no sign be given it but the sign of Jonah, the prophet.
Matthew 12:40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Matthew 12:41 The men of Nineveh will stand up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, someone greater than Jonah is here.
Matthew 12:42 The queen of the south will rise up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, someone greater than Solomon is here.

Luke 11:29 When the multitudes were gathering together to him, he began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks after a sign. No sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah, the prophet.
Luke 11:30 For even as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will also the Son of Man be to this generation.

Jonah 1:17 – Yahweh prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Jonah 2:2 – He said, “I called because of my affliction to Yahweh. He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried. You heard my voice.”

World English Bible translation

Some claim that there is a discrepancy in the Bible’s account, that if Jesus was buried at sundown on Friday and raised Sunday morning near sunrise he would have been in the tomb over only two nighttime periods (Friday and Saturday) and one daytime period (Saturday) for a total of approximately 36 to 38 hours, not the three days and three nights that Jesus spoke as the “sign of Jonah”.

There are two things to note here: (1) Jesus did not say that he would be dead for three days and three nights; this is simply the general assumption placed on his words. What he said is that he, the Son of the man, David, would be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. (2) Even if Jesus meant “heart of the earth” to mean in death, we need to note that this terminology could be viewed as purely idiomatic, and implied that he would be in the heart of the earth “till the third day.” The proof of this is to be found in Esther 4:16; 5:1; Genesis 42:17,18; 2 Chronicles 10:5,12.

We should note that the elders and chief priests had demanded of our Lord a sign of his authority. However, we should also note that that their motive was evil, not sincere. Indeed, they already had many “signs” but chose to ignore them. Jesus, evidently while in Galilee (Matthew 13:1), had just healed a withered hand, and cast out a devil, but their reaction had been to hold a “council against him. how they might destroy him, and to accuse him of casting out devils ‘by Beelzebub.’” (Matthew 12:10-14, 22-24) While in Jerusalem, Jesus had healed one who had been blind from birth (John 9:14,16), as well as one who could not walk. (John 5:9-13) These religious leaders had the testimony of these, but what was their response? They came up with a plot to “put Lazarus also to death; because that by reason of him many of the Jews … believed on Jesus.” (John 12:10, 11) Jesus rebuked that wicked generation of Jewish leaders, calling them “vipers. hypocrites, whited sepulchres.” — Matthew 23:1,33.

Nevertheless, we do well to not read into Jesus’ statement recorded in Matthew 12:40 something that is not there. Jesus used the event of Jonah’s being in the belly of the whale as a sign concerning the time when he would be, not in death, but in the heart of the earth. The term “in the heart of the earth” is not a literal expression. The heart gives the power of movement to the body. If our heart stops beating we no longer have any power to move. Nor should we necessarily look for parallels to every event of Jonah while in the belly’s fish to have a corresponding fulfillment in the three days and three nights in which Jesus was in the heart of the earth. For instance, Jonah repented while in the belly of fish and prayed concerning his repentance; Jesus had nothing to repent of. Jesus was not buried in any literal “heart” of the earth but was laid in a cave tomb dug into the face of a hill. Nor did he actually stay in that tomb for three days and three nights, but he was there for parts of three days and two nights.

When Jonah was in “the belly of the fish” he was not dead. The scripture says that he was in the belly of sheol; yet he was not literally in sheol, the realm of death. What was true of Jonah is that he was no longer in control of his own movements. Where the fish went, Jonah went. The normal free functions of Jonah’s life was taken away, and he was as good as dead, and had no miracle occurred, he would have indeed died, and gone into the oblivious condition of sheol. Similarly, when Jesus was arrested in the garden, he exclaimed, “this is your hour, and the power of darkness” (Luke 22:53). From that point onward the fate of Jesus was in the hands of others. Where they went, he went. Therefore, we conclude that he at that point entered “the heart of the earth,” but, although one could say that he was as good as dead, he was not yet actually dead in sheol. Thus Jesus told his disciples of how “that he must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders, and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised on the third day.” This could be understood as the “third day” from time he began those sufferings, not necessarily the “third day” after he was killed. (Matthew 16:21) At any rate, the “three days and three nights” in which Jesus is in the “heart of earth” appears to cover not only the time he was dead, but they began when he started to suffer many things from the elders, chief priests and scribes.

While the Jewish leaders did not fully understand Jesus’ words (Matthew 13:13-15; John 8:14,43), they did understand that Jesus claimed that he would be raised from the dead after three days, for they told Pilate “that deceiver said while he was still alive: ‘After three days I will rise again,’” and desired his tomb to be guarded allegedly to avoid his disciples from stealing the body to make the claim appear correct. Pilate replied, “You have a guard. Go, make it as secure as you can.” And then we read: “So they went, and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone, the guard being with them.” (Matthew 27:63-66) And the very ones assigned to insure there would be no fraud, observed that “the angel of the Lord descended from the sky, and came and rolled away the stone from the door, and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. For fear of him, the guards shook, and became like dead men.” (Matthew 28:2-4) This was reported to the chief priests and elders, who then bribed the guards with “large amount of silver” to change their story and claim the disciples had stolen Jesus’ body, thus indicating the effect that this promised “sign” had upon their evil hearts. Therefore, the ones who falsely accused Jesus of being a deceiver proved themselves to be deceivers. — Matthew 28:11-15.

And, yet, for those whose hearts were not entrenched with evil motives, what a convincing evidence that the sign of Jonah had been fulfilled! The very guards which they had set to insure against fraud testified of the truthfulness of Jesus’ words! Rather than accept this “sign of Jonah”, however, the actions of that wicked generation of Jewish leaders actually made manifest the wickedness of their heart! Nevertheless, for those whose hearts could receive it, the sign of Jonah was truly convincing, and testimony of the disciples is still convincing to this day. And it could be reasoned on more deeply. Paul tells us, “But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.” — 1 Corinthians 15:20.

Jesus paid the full price to buy back what was lost in Adam, that is, death (lack of sentiency), and, as far as his humanity is concerned, that death was eternal, even as the condemnation upon Adam was eternal death. The eternal condemnation upon Adam and through him upon the human race would have remained eternal, had it not been for the corresponding offsetting price paid by Jesus. — Romans 5:12-19; 1 Corinthians 15:21,22.

Which brings us the latter parts of Jesus’ statements pertaining to the condemnation of the evil generation during the day of judgment by the Ninevites. We remember that there are two resurrections in the “last day”: one is of the believer of this age, who is resurrected to life, and the other is of the unbelievers who are resurrected to judgment. (John 5:28,29; 6:39,40,44; 11:24; 12:47,48; Acts 24:15; Revelation 20:6,11-13) The people of heathen Nineveh in the Judgment Age, in the Millennial Age, he assured them, would rank higher than they, for the Ninevites did repent at the preaching of Jonah, while Jesus spoke of those who did not repent at the preaching of a greater than Jonah. The Queen of Sheba had journeyed afar to hear Solomon’s wisdom; yet these who were in the presence of a greater than Solomon failed to realize or, probably more correctly, did not appreciate who this was, and proclaimed his message to be a fraud.

The question is asked: Why was Jesus dead for parts of three days? This is one of those questions that are not directly answered in the Bible, except that there was to be a sign of three days in which Jesus was to be “in the heart of the earth” for three days and three nights. (Matthew 12:40) While we believe that these three days and three nights began many hours before Jesus died, the time period of his death is included in these three days and three nights. Jesus would have to be dead for a period long enough that his being raised would actually be a sign, else it may have been claimed that he was never dead to begin with. However, the only part of this that was a “sign” to the unbelievers was that of the empty tomb, since Jesus did not appear to unbelievers after his being raised. Nevertheless, for the vast majority of the unbelievers, it was not a “sign” that would lead to their belief, but rather it was a “sign” that would confirm their disbelief even in when faced with such a sign.

There may be also a symbolic significance to the number three, but, at present, we do not know of any place that the scriptures reveal such a significance in this case. Although we believe Bullinger is not fully correct in his summation of the symbolic meaning of the number three (there is nothing in the Bible about three persons in one God), and although he does not discuss the three days that Jesus was in the heart of the earth, one might read his study on the number three:

http://philologos.org/__eb-nis/three.htm

It is our thought that the number three does signify divine perfection, and as such the three days and three nights could signify the fact that Jesus’ perfect human being (having retained the divine nature — the godlike qualities — as a human) had indeed been sacrificed; this, however, allows for the meaning of divine nature is different from the meaning that most Bible Students, by tradition, attribute to that term.

Matthew 4:7 – Jesus said to him, “Again, it is written, ‘You shall not test [Yahweh], your God.’” King James has “the Lord, your God.”

Luke 4:12 – Jesus answering, said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt [Yahweh] your God.’”

The above scriptures are being presented as proof that Jesus is God, that is, that Jesus is allegedly a person of the only true God (trinitarian), and/or that Jesus is Yahweh/Jehovah (Mormon, oneness, and some others).

Actually, if Satan thought that Jesus was God Almighty then he would have known how fruitless it would have been to try to deceive God so as to provoke God to sin. However, there is no indication whatsoever that Satan thought that he was trying to get Yahweh to sin.

Satan did not say that Jesus was his God, but rather the son of God:

“If you are the Son of God.” — Matthew 4:3,6; Luke 4:9.

The demons referred to Jesus, not as the Most High, but rather as “son of the Most High” (Mark 5:7; Luke 8:28), which is confirmed to be spoken of the babe Jesus in Luke 1:32.

This was the emphasis that Satan himself was putting on his tests of Jesus, that is, in effect, Satan was saying to Jesus: “I want you to prove that you are son of God by doing this….” In reality, it was Satan’s hopes to trick Jesus, to deceive Jesus, into being disobedient. Satan was not asking Jesus to prove that Jesus was God. Certainly Satan would have known if Jesus was Yahweh, and knowing that, would have also known that it would fruitless to try to deceive Yahweh into disobeying or denying Himself.

Let us read the context:

Matthew 4:5 – Then the devil took him into the holy city. He set him on the pinnacle of the temple,
Matthew 4:6 – and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, ‘He will give his angels charge concerning you.’ and, ‘On their hands they will bear you up, So that you don’t dash your foot against a stone.’”
Matthew 4:7- Jesus said to him, “Again, it is written, ‘You shall not test Yahweh, your God.’”

What did Jesus say? Jesus did not appeal to himself, so as to tell Satan, I am your God whom you should not test,” but rather Jesus appeals on his own behalf to written Word of his God, to the Law Covenant that was made with the children of Israel, recognizing himself as belonging to that covenant with Israel: “Again, it is written, ‘You shall not test [Yahweh], your God’” (Matthew 4:7), thereby showing his denial to submit to the temptation of Satan. The expression “your God” refers to Yahweh as the God of Israel, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Exodus 3:14,15), who is also the God of Jesus, the God who sent Jesus. — Deuteronomy 18:15-19; Matthew 4:4 (Deuteronomy 8:3; Luke 4:4); Matthew 4:7 (Deuteronomy 6:16); Matthew 4:10 (Exodus 20:3-5; 34:14; Deuteronomy 6:13,14; 10:20; Luke 4:8); Matthew 22:29-40; Matthew 26:42; Matthew 27:46; Mark 10:6 (Genesis 1:27; Genesis 2:7,20-23); Mark 14:36; 15:34; Luke 22:42; John 4:3; 5:30; 6:38; 17:1,3; 20:17; Romans 15:6; 2 Corinthians 1:3; 11:31; Ephesians 1:3,17; Hebrews 1:9; 10:7; 1 Peter 1:3; Revelation 2:7; 3:2,12.
http://tinyurl.com/yukbvs
http://godandson.reslight.net/jesusnotyhwh.html

Jesus was referring to the Law as given to Israel, Deuteronomy 6:16, which words were spoken to the nation of Israel, which was the only nation which had Yahweh as their God by covenant relationship. (Exodus 19:5,6; Deuteronomy 7:6; Amos 3:2) Thus, the words “your God” are in reference to the Israel’s God. Was Jesus here claiming that he [Jesus] was Yahweh, and was Jesus telling Satan that he [Jesus] was Satan’s God (as though Satan were under the Law through Moses) and that Satan should not be testing Satan’s God? Was Jesus, in effect, claiming that Satan was in covenant relationship (through Moses) with Yahweh, and thus should not tempt his — Satan’s — God? In reality, such an idea has to be added to and read into what Jesus said, and such an idea would actually take what Jesus said out of the context of the quote that Jesus gave, so as to apply to Jesus as being Satan’s God.

On the other hand, Jesus was, by birth, an Israelite, born under the law. (Galatians 4:4) Jesus knew who his God was. Jesus was applying the verse to himself as an Israelite, that he [Jesus], who worshiped Yahweh as his God, should not test Yahweh by submitting to the stunt that Satan was telling him to do.

Therefore, in reality, the fact is that Jesus was not saying to Satan that Jesus was “Yahweh, your God,” the God that Satan was not to test.

By Benjamin Wilson

The study below, written by Benjamin Wilson, is believed to be in the public domain.

In what sense was Christ the son of man?

There is no doubt whatever as to Christ being “the Son of Man” — but in what sense it is asked. Did this phrase mean that he was simply a man — one of human kind; or did it imply something more than this? I think more is comprehended in the phrase. Jesus very frequently spoke of himself as the Son of Man, and must have meant something beyond the idea that some have advanced, that he was the son of the man Joseph, the husband of his mother Mary. I will give a few references for the reader to examine, where Jesus calls himself the Son of Man. (Matthew 20:18; 18:11; 16:13-16; 12:8; 20:18,19; 25:31; 26:64) These are all from Matthew’s testimony. They prove that the Son of Man was the anointed one, and are to be so understood. The Jews also understood the term as synonymous with Messiah. What other conclusion could they or we arrive at after reading Daniel 7:13,14? Let the reader turn to this reference, and see if it does not refer to the Messiah. But why is he called the Son of Man? Surely not in the same sense that I am the son of a man, because begotten by him; nor as the term is so frequently applied to Ezekiel the prophet; nor as used by David in the eighth Psalm, and as quoted by Paul in Hebrews 2:6. The phrase as used by Jesus is always in the emphatic form, though our English versions do not show it. The Greek is–ho whyos tou anthropou, “the Son of the Man.” This definite form of expression implies that Christ was the son of some particular man. Shall we say the son of Joseph, the carpenter? Did Jesus mean this every time, when he used this emphatic form of expression? I trow not. Then whose son was he? I answer, “the son of David.” The Messiah was to be the seed of David, according to the Prophets, and the genealogical records as given by Matthew and Luke, prove that Jesus was the Son of David, with whom Jehovah made an everlasting covenant, saying, “His seed shall endure forever, and his throne as the sun before me,” (Psalm 89:36). The genealogical records prove him to be the Son of David. The prophets foretold that the Messiah who should sit on David’s throne, and order his kingdom, was to be the Son of Jesse and David. (Isaiah 9:6,7; 11:1; Jeremiah 23:5; 33:15; Psalm 132:11) The apostles believed that Jesus was the Messiah and the son of David. Peter, in his discourse on the day of Pentecost, tells the Jews that Jesus, according to the flesh, was from the loins of David; and Paul says that he was “made of the seed of David according to the flesh,” (Acts 2:30; Romans 1:3; 2 Timothy 2:8). And the glorified Jesus himself declares: “I am the root and offspring of David,” (Revelation 22:16). From these testimonies I conclude that Jesus the Christ was the Son of Man, not in the sense of simply being a man, but because he was the son of the man David, with whom Jehovah made an everlasting covenant, that the throne and kingdom of Israel should belong to him and his seed forever.

In what sense was Christ the son of God?

He was called the son of God while in the flesh. But it is asked in what sense? I answer, because he was God’s son, in the sense of being begotten by him. Christ called God his Father, and God acknowledged him as his son. (See Matthew 3:17; 17:5) If Christ was the Son of God only as we are sons of God, then he was not the son of God, but a son; nor would there be any more reason in confessing him to be the Son of the living God, as Peter and all the apostles did, than in confessing some other believer to be God’s son. But Jesus claimed to be the Son of God, and consequently the Messiah. He also required his disciples to believe this truth. (See John 9:35-37; 10:36) The belief that Jesus, the Son of Man, was also the Christ, the Son of the living God, lies at the very foundation of Christianity — on it the Church was to be built. (Matthew 16:16-18) Jesus was more than an adopted son by faith–was more than a begotten son by the word of truth; he was “the only begotten of the Father,” (John 1:14; 3:16; 1 John 4:9). The Father with audible voice, proclaimed him as his beloved Son, (Matthew 3:17; 17:5). Paul calls him God’s own Son, and his dear son, (Galatians 4:4-5; Colossians 1:13).

Objections:

The following material was not written by Benjamin Wilson, but rather by R. Day. Unless otherwise noted, the World English Bible is used for Bible quotes.

One objects that the term “son of man” was a common title used by Jews that meant that the person was a simply a human. According to this reasoning, Jesus was both “son of man” — a human being, and “Son of God” — the Supreme Being. The argument is usually vaguely put forth, but sometimes declared to “clearly” show that Jesus was both man and the Supreme Being. We have never seen any attempt to explain how Jesus was and is supposedly still two “beings” at once.

Of course, the expression “son of man” does in a general way refer to an offspring of a human being. Nevertheless, there is scriptural proof that the expression “son of man” was referring to a certain offspring of a certain man, that is, the long waited for Messiah, who was to a son of a man in a special way, that is, the son of the man, David. In the Messianic sense as related to the promises, “son of man”, “Son of God”, as well as “Son of David”, are expressions that are used almost interchangeable.

Once Jesus asked his disciples: “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” (Matthew 16:13, New American Standard — NAS) Notice how the title is used. It is not used as though it were speaking of any son of any man, but it is used as though it was being understood as referring to a specific son of man. Thus, we can see that this title was, indeed being used by the Jews in a specific way, that is, as referring to promises related to one who was to come as the son of a specific man, that is, the Son of David.

The disciples responded: “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” (Matthew 16:14, NAS) From this we can see that the Jews did have a specific application of the term “the Son of Man” in mind, that is, the promised Messiah. They were not expecting the Messiah to be the Supreme Being and also a human being.

Jesus then asked them: “But who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15) Peter answered: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (Matthew 16:16) From his answer we determine that the expression “Son of Man” was being considered as related to the promises concerning the Messiah and “Son of the Living God.” In other words, “the Son of Man” is made equal to “Son of the Living God”. It was evidently an expression being used by the Jews in general as denoting the promised one, the promised Messiah, the Son of David.

Brother Wilson in the article above gave a list of scriptures that show that the title was a messianic title. An examination of some of the references above prove that the expression “Son of Man” was indeed synonymous with Messiah (Christ), the one promised to come as the son of the man, David, the Anointed of Yahweh. — Matthew 20:18; 18:11; 16:13-16; 12:8; 20:18,19; 25:31; 26:64.

Another objection is that Wilson stated: “The phrase as used by Jesus is always in the emphatic form, though our English versions do not show it.” Yet John 5:27 are the words of Jesus, but in this place the expression is anarthrous, and could be rendered “son of a man”. Doesn’t this show that Jesus was being given the judgment because, not only was he the Supreme Being, but he was also a son of a man, that is, human?

John 5:27 states: “He also gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man.” (World English Bible translation) We answer that yes, Wilson evidently did overlook this one time that Jesus did not use the definite article. Jesus several times refers to himself as “Son” and to the only true Supreme Being (John 17:1,3) as his Father in the context of John 5:27. Our trinitarian neighbors wish to read into the two expressions that somehow this makes Jesus a hypostatic union — both the Supreme Being and human being. In reality, there is no need to read such into what Jesus said. The statement is that God, the only true Supreme Being, the God and Father of Jesus, gave to the Son the authority to execute judgment “because” he is a son of man. We are left wondering why there would be any merit of Jesus’ simply being the son of any man that would be the “cause” that he would receive authority to execute judgment. The point seems to be that as pointed out in Hebrews 2:17; 5:8, he was made like his brothers, and, his sufferings while in full to his obedience qualified him to be given the authority to judge. Nevertheless, this was not simply “because” Jesus was the son of any man, such as Joseph, his “foster” father, for if he had been, he would have been a sinner just as Joseph; rather Jesus was counted as the promised the Son of David, to whom the promises belong, having been given a special body untainted by the sin of Adam. (Romans 5:12-19; Hebrews 10:5) Thus, we have no reason to believe that Jesus intended the expression “Son of Man” in John 5:27 to mean that he was simply of a son of any man, for such a generalization would additionally make him a sinner as all men. It is to the Son of David the promises are made concerning authority and judgment. — Psalm 2:6-9; 132:11; Isaiah 9:6,7; 11:1; Jeremiah 22:30; 23:5; Daniel 7:13,14; Matthew 9:6; 12:8; 25:31; Matthew 26:64; 28:18; Mark 2:10,28; 13:26; 14:52; Luke 1:32; 5:24; 6:5; 21:27; 22:69; John 5:27; 3:13; Acts 13:34; Ephesians 1:15-23; Philippians 2:9-11; Hebrews 1:2.

Some say that the expression “Son of Man” simply means that Jesus was the Son of Adam, basing this on the idea that the Hebrew word for “Adam” means “man”, as used in Daniel 8:17. Others claim that Jesus spoke in Hebrew and used the exact term as recorded in Daniel 8:17. While we might consider that Jesus was indeed counted, or reckoned, as a son of Adam, due to the lineage of his foster father, and his mother, from the usage of the phrase in the New Testament, we highly doubt that this is what Jesus had in mind by the expression, “Son of Man”, as he applied this to himself. There are some who go off into even greater extremes, and claim that this title means that Jesus was actually an reincarnation of Adam. How this phrase should show that Jesus is an reincarnation of Adam is vaguely argued, to say the least, for how can stating that one is the son of a person mean that the son is the one of whom he is the son? At any rate, we believe it best to simply stay by the scriptures, rather than add all this extra-Biblical philosophy to the scriptures.

Nevertheless, we need to bear out that if Jesus had been the son of Adam in the sense that all mankind is, this would have made him also a sinner as all of us. Jesus actually had not father on earth, and thus was not contaminated with Adamic sin that pervades mankind. (Romans 5:12-19) Adam lost the dominion for man because of his sin, so that now we do not yet see all things in subjection to man. (Hebrews 2:8) Jesus did come as human, a little lower than the angels, crowned with glory, and provided the redemption price to restore this glory and dominion to man (not to angels). — Hebrews 2:9.

Although Jesus was not actually under the condemnation through Adam (in him was life — John 1:4), he did willingly submit to undergoing the penalty of the condemnation in order to take the condemnation off Adam and the race in Adam’s loins. (Romans 5:12-19; 1 Corinthians 15:21,22; 1 Timothy 2:5,6; Hebrews 2:9) It is in this manner that he who knew no sin was sin for us. — 1 Corinthians 5:21.

Thus the term, Son of Man, is not being used to represent one in condemnation, which would be the case had Jesus actually been born simply as a “son of Adam” as the rest of the human race, for the human race through Adam are sinful flesh, dying (1 Corinthians 15:22; Romans 5:12-19 – See New American Standard), since through Adam the many — the whole human race — are made sinners. Had Jesus been of such sinful stock, he could not have had life (John 1:4), nor could he have died for our sins. As the son of the man, having received a specially prepared body from God (Hebrews 10:5), Jesus in the days of his flesh was indeed, the Son of God, as was Adam before Adam sinned, the sinless Adam being a type of the Messiah. (Luke 3:38; Romans 5:14) Nevertheless, the title, Son of the Man, refers more especially to the inheritance of the higher dominion that is to restore man’s glory and dominion over the animal kingdom. — Daniel 2:35,44; Isaiah 2:2-4; 11:6-9; Matthew 1:1; 9:27; 12:23; 15:22; 16:13,27; 20:30,31; 21:29,15; 22:42; Mark 10:47,48; 12:35; Luke 1:32; 18:38,39; Romans 1:3; 2 Timothy 2:8; Revelation 5:5; 20:1-5.

Jesus was counted, or reckoned, as the seed of David because of his parents, even though Jesus’ actual father was God in heaven. As a result of having God as his Father, was did Adam before Adam sinned, Jesus’ human soul, including his body and his blood, was not tainted by the sin of Adam, as are the rest of mankind. How did Jesus’ body come down from heaven? Does
this mean that Jesus was a human with a body of flesh before coming to into
the world? We know that Jesus’ body was formed in the womb of Mary, but the conception of the flesh was from the God of Jesus by means of the holy spirit. (Matthew 1:20) This does not mean that the flesh that was conceived — begotten — was God Almighty, but rather, the scripture says that Jesus’ body was prepared for him by his God (Hebrews 10:5), for the purpose of its being an offering for sin. (Hebrews 10:10; John 6:51) Jesus spoke of his body, his flesh, in John 6:32 as symbolically the “bread of life” that was from the only true God, his Father, who sent Jesus. “My Father gives you the true bread out of heaven.” (John 17:1,3) Thus, while his body was formed in the womb of Mary, the God of Jesus was the one who prepared his body. His body was not tainted by the sinful flesh of mankind. (Romans 8:3) Jesus was without sin, he never fell short of the glory of God, as those who are dying “in Adam”. (Romans 3:23; 1 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 4:15; 1 Peter 2:22; 1 John 3:5) He was not ‘by nature a child of wrath’ as mankind in general, due to the sin of Adam. (Ephesians 2:3) Having no sin, the was the “bread of life”. In him was life, a sinless life, equal ot that of Adam’s before Adam sinned, which he could offer in sacrifice for the world of mankind dying in Adam — the just for the unjust. (John 1:4; 1 Corinthians 15:3; 1 Peter 3:18) He could offer his flesh — his humanity — as a sacrifice for sin, and thus by our symbolically eating and partaking of his flesh, through faith in him, we can have life.

This scripture is often used by trinitarians… Read [...]

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name [Greek, onoma] of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” — Matthew 28:19, New American Standard Version

This scripture is often used by trinitarians to make it appear that that there are three persons in God. Others refer to the scripture as meaning that Jesus is expressed as three modes, manifestations, etc. What we want to know is exactly what does this scripture say, what does it not say, and how does harmonize with the rest of the scriptures.

We first note that there is nothing in Matthew 28:19 that says the three mentioned are co-equal or co-eternal. We know many try to say that since it says “name” — singular — that this means that there are three persons being spoken of with one name, and that this proves that there is a trinity of persons in one God. Matthew 28:19 does not say that these are three persons, although two of those mentioned are persons. But even if it was speaking of three persons, it does not say or imply that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are three persons in one Supreme Being.

It is apparent that the word “name” here does not refer to any separate appellations of the three mentioned. We have the personal name of the Father — Yahweh. We have the personal name of the Son — Jesus. But the scriptures do not give a personal name for the holy spirit. Therefore the word “name” is either used in the sense of authority or of character.

And the Bible does use of the word “name” in the Bible is that of authority or power. Thus David sent his men to Nabal in his name, that is, with his authority. (1 Samuel 25:5,9) In Matthew 7:22, many are described as claiming to have done many works in the Master’s name, that is, with his authority. Peter and Paul were asked by the priests: “By what power, or in what name, have you done this?” (Acts 4:7) These references all show that by coming in the name of another means to come with the authority given by that person. It does not necessarily refer to the word or appelation itself that is used to distinguish that person. In reference to this Robertson states concerning Matthew 28:19:

The use of name (onoma) here is a common one in the Septuagint and the papyri for power or authority. For the use of ei with onoma in the sense here employed, not meaning into, see Matthew 10:41ff. (cf. also Matthew 12:41). — Robertson, A.T. “Commentary on Matthew 28:19″. “Robertson’s Word Pictures of the New Testament”.

However, we note that the disciples never used this formula when baptizing, but they simply baptized “in the name of Jesus.” (Acts 2:38; 8:16; 10:48) Does this mean that Jesus is the Father, the Son and the holy spirit? Some have so claimed, but this idea has to be read into these scriptures. Jesus is the Son and is always represented as the Son of God as distinct from his God of whom he is the Son all through the New Testament. But the question does remain as to why the disciples baptized “in the name of Jesus”, when he said to baptize in the name of the Father, and the of the Son and of the holy spirit.

There are many scholars, both trinitarian and non-trinitarian, who claim that Matthew 28:19 has been changed from what Jesus originally said. It is claimed that Jesus originally told his disciples to baptise “in my name”, not in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Noting that Eusebius, who had copies of earlier manuscripts that no longer exist, cites Matthew 28:19 eighteen times always as: “Go and make disciples of all nations in my name,” without the mention of “the name” of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy spirit, some have concluded that Matthew 28:19, as it has come to us, contains a textual corruption.

For instance, in his *Demonstratio Evangelica*, Eusebius gives this testmony concerning the commission of Matthew 28:19 (col. 240, p. 136):

For he did not enjoin them ‘to make disciples of all nations’ simply and without qualification, but with the essential addition ‘in his name.’ For so great was the virtue attached to his appellation that the Apostle says, God bestowed on him the name above every name, that in the name of Jesus every knee shall bow of things in heaven and on earth and under the earth. It was right therefore that he should emphasize the virtue of the power residing in his name but hidden from the many, and therefore say to his Apostles, Go ye and make disciples of all nations in my name.

These links are provided only because of the evidence presented; we do not necessarily agree with the conclusions reached by the authors.

Due to the overwhelming evidence that has been presented to us, we have come to recognize this line of reasoning as the most probable way to view Matthew 28:19.

Nevertheless, what if Jesus did actually say the words as they appear in our Bible today? It should be apparent from the scriptures as a whole that the singular use of the word “name” does not indicate three persons in one Supreme Being, nor that Jesus is being spoken of as three modes. One has to go beyond what is written to come these conclusions. The word “name” is often used singularly to denote a commonality even when speaking of many individuals, especially when speaking in the sense of reputation or authority: Genesis 5:2; 48:6; Deuteronomy 7:24; 9:14; 12:3; 18:20; Joshua 23:7; Ruth 1:2; Ezra 2:61; Nehemiah 7:63; Psalm 9:5; 109:13; Hosea 32:14; Zephaniah 3:19; Revelation 3:1.

Another thought concerning the usage of the singular word “name” in Matthew 28:19: We notice that Psalm 77:20 states: “You led your people like a flock, By the hand of Moses and Aaron.” It speaks of Yahweh leading Israel by the hand [singular] of Moses and Aaron. This supplies another example of the usage of a singular with more than one person, in this case, two persons: Moses and Aaron. We would not think that since the singular [hand] is used of two, that these two persons must be one human being (as it is claimed that Matthew 28:19 shows two persons in one God being), nor should we think that since the singular [name] is used of three in Matthew 28:19, that these three must be one “God” being.

Concerning the Messiah it is prophesied that he was to speak in the name of Yahweh, his God. — Deuternomy 18:15-19.

Yahweh said to me, They have well said that which they have spoken. I will raise them up a prophet from among their brothers, like you; and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I shall command him. It shall happen, that whoever will not listen to my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. — Deuteronomy 18:17-19.

Jesus said: “I have come in my Father’s name, and you don’t receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him.” The Jewish leaders claimed that when Jesus called God his Father, that Jesus was making himself equal to God. In saying the above, Jesus was letting these Jewish leaders know where he received his authority, that is, from Yahweh his God and Father.

Likewise, when the disciples are told to go make disciples and baptize, Jesus told them by what authority they were to baptize. In Matthew 28:19: the word “name” is used to represent of the solidarity of authority in the Father, the Son and the holy spirit. Thus to baptize in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit would also signify to baptize by the authority of all three, which authority is total agreement.

As mentioned before, the word “name” is often used singularly as a collective term to denote a commonality even when speaking of many individuals, especially when speaking in the sense of reputation or authority:

Genesis 5:2 – He created them male and female, and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.

Genesis 48:6 – Your issue, who you become the father of after them, will be yours. They will be called after the name of their brothers in their inheritance

Deuteronomy 7:24 – He will deliver their kings into your hand, and you shall make their name to perish from under the sky: there shall no man be able to stand before you, until you have destroyed them. See also Deuteronomy 9:14; 12:3

Deuteronomy 18:20 – But the prophet, who shall speak a word presumptuously in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who shall speak in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.

Ruth 1:2 – The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem-judah. They came into the country of Moab, and continued there

Ezra 2:61 – Of the children of the priests: the children of Habaiah, the children of Hakkoz, the children of Barzillai, who took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called after their name.

– See also: Nehemiah 7:63; Psalm 9:5; 109:13; Hosea 32:14; Zephaniah 3:19; Revelation 3:1.

Additionally, we have the verse preceding the statement that all authority that Jesus has is given to Jesus, thus indicating that the Son receives his authority from another, a superior being to himself, that is, the Father. This agrees with John 17:1,3, where Jesus refers to his Father as the “only” true Supreme Being, and then excludes himself from being any part of that only true Supreme Being by saying that he was sent forth by that only true Supreme Being. This is further corroborated by John 20:17, where Jesus refers to the Father as the Supreme Being over himself. Nor could this have been a temporary condition, for we find similar statements by Jesus in Revelation 3:12, after his exaltation by the Father. This is also shown in Ephesians 1:17-22, in that the Supreme Being of our Lord Jesus “set him” at his own right hand in the heavenly places. Thus Jesus has been given authority above all the governments and dominions. — Daniel 7:13,14; Psalm 2:6-8; 110:1,2; Matthew 11:27; John 3:35

Thus, there is no reason to read “trinity” into the phrase “name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”. There is absolutely nothing in this phrase that hints of three persons in one God. Such an idea has to be “read into” what is stated in Matthew 28:19. — Genesis 5:2; 48:6; Deuteronomy 7:24; 9:14; 12:3; 18:20; Joshua 23:7; Ruth 1:2; Ezra 2:61; Nehemiah 7:63; Psalm 9:5; 109:13; Hosea 32:14; Zephaniah 3:19; Revelation 3:1.

Appendix One

We note below some online quotes in English that make use of the singular name in reference to more than one person. No one would think of these as being one being made up of more than one person.

“Christopher Columbus… is portrayed here in the act of taking possession of the New World in name of the King and Queen of Spain.”

Such a statement as the above does not mean that the President is one person and the Congress is another person, nor does it mean that the President is the same “being” or “entity” as the “Congress”. Both the President and the Congress do represent the same government, but are totally separate parts of the government.
We should note examples where “name” singular is used in reference to persons as well as abstract principles, such as: “in the name of the Queen and the law!”

The above references are not in the Bible, and are in English, not Hebrew or Greek. As stated earlier, we have no specific Biblical references that follow the same construction using the singular word “name” (or the plural word “names”) as given in Matthew 28:19. But, we believe that if one looks hard enough one will find this is true in most languages, that the phrase “in the name of” is usually singular even though more than one person and/or things are being of. There is no plural usage in the Bible of the phrase “in the names of” at all. All of the other usages of “in the name of” in the Bible relate to only one person, so there is nothing else in the Bible itself — neither in the Old Testament or the New Testament — to compare Matthew 28:19, as far as the phrase, “in the name” followed by persons or things connected with “and”. We believe that if such a claim that the singular usage of “name” in Matthew 28:19 was so important as proof of the alleged trinity doctrine, then God would have made sure that there were other scriptures for comparison with the same or similar construct, but we do not find any, either with the singular usage of the phrase “in the name of”, or the plural usage as “in the names of”. Without such an example for comparision, perhaps the expression would be used “in the names of [this person], and of [that person] and of [someone else], then one could at least say there would be a better argument that the singular usage of the word “name” in Matthew 28:19 had a greater significance, although such a comparison would still not be enough to make Matthew 28:19 say what trinitarians wish to make it say, that is, that there are three persons in one God.

What we do find in the Bible, however, are many usages of the singular word “name” in reference to more than one person or thing (although in some cases it should be apparent that the singular is used collectively). Genesis 5:2; 11:4; 48:6; Exodus 17:7; 23:13; Deuteronomy 7:24; 9:14; 12:3; 18:20; Joshua 7:9; 23:7; Ruth 1:2; 2 Samuel 7:9; 1 Chronicles 4:38,41; 1 Chronicles 6:65; 7:16; 12:31; 16:41; 17:18; Ezra 2:61; Nehemiah 7:63; Psalm 9:5; 109:13; Hosea 2:17; Zephaniah 3:19; Revelation 3:1.

There is one usage that is spoken of by David Moore in the “bgreek” discussion threads. He states:

On the use of the singular ONOMA with more than one name, as in Mat. 28:19, let me mention Deissmann’s citation of a possibly related construction in a papyrus from Fayyum in the “reign of Antonius Pius” (?). The phrase runs in Greek as follows: TA U(PARCONT[A] EIS ONOMA DUEIN. Which translates to, “that (i.e. property or means) which belongs to the name of the two.”
http://www.ibiblio.org/bgreek/archives/greek-3/msg00388.html

Appendix Two

The argument is made that the word “name” signifies a single name, that is, an appellation that applies to all three. Where would this kind reasoning lead us? What would this “name” be? There is no record in the New Testament writing of anyone being baptized in the name of Yahweh (Jehovah), or in the name of the Father, or the name of the Spirit. One site says the single “name” referred to is “God”. Again, we find no reference to anyone being baptized in the name of “God” in the New Testament. As far as we know, there is no reference in the ante-Nicene writings of the so-called “church fathers” that support this idea either. In the New Testament writings the only “name” referred to in which one is baptized is the name “Jesus.” (Acts 2:28; see also: Acts 8:16, 10:48, 19:5) Making an application of this to the single usage of the word “name” in Matthew 28:19 would cause us to believe that the name, “Jesus”, being applied to the Father and the holy spirit, as well as to the Son of God.

Some trinitarians seem to contradict themselves with this idea, for in reference to Matthew 28:19 they will refer to the “names” [plural] of the Father and of the Son and the holy spirit, but then at the same time insist that the singular usage of “name” means that this is speaking of three persons in one God.

In actuality, the word “name” is not referring to any appellation, but rather to the authority by which Jesus’ apostles were to baptize.

Matthew 28:18 – Jesus came to them and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.”

Matthew 28:18 is often quoted as proof of both the trinity and oneness doctrines. One of the “oneness” believers states concerning this that if Jesus has “all power” then nobody else can have any. This, of course, is absurd. Taken as the thought is given, it would deny that anyone else can have any power at all! Therefore, according to this statement, Satan no longer has any power! The angels no longer have any power! The demons no longer have any power! The God and Father of Jesus no longer has any power! Human rulers no longer have any power to rule! Evidently, and then, if taken to the extreme, it would mean that no living thing has any power to walk, to eat, to work, to think, etc. We highly doubt, however, that this is what the writer had in mind in stated “all power” given to Jesus means that no one else had any, but we are just giving the logical conclusions that can be drawn from such a statement. The writer stated this, we are sure, in an effort to support the claim that Jesus became the Father (the only true God — John 17:1,3), and idea that we do not find anywhere in the entire Bible.

The idea that Jesus was claiming no one else has any power at all has to be assumed and added to what Jesus said. Paul does not so assume, for he says that it is “evident” that the One who subjected all things to Jesus is excepted from the “all” that has been subjected to Jesus. (1 Corinthians 15:27) Thus the God and Father of Jesus did not, has not, nor will he ever, give to Jesus the power and the glory that only belongs to the God and Father of Jesus, the being of the only Most High. (Isaiah 42:8) When Jesus stated, however, that all power has been given to him, he is not saying that no one else has any power, but that the power that has been given to him, as the one sitting next to the Most High, exceeds the power that has been given by the Yahweh (whom Jesus sits at the right hand of — Psalm 110:1) to anyone else, so that all things are made subject to him. In this relationship, it is evident that all the power given to Jesus by Yahweh does not include the being of Yahweh, on whose right hand Jesus has been made to sit. — Ephesians 2:20-22.

We also need to examine the word that is render “all” regarding “all” power that is given to Jesus, which is transliterated as “pasa”. It is a form of the Greek “Pas”, and all forms of this word look to context as well common evidence for what is included or excluded. As shown above is evidently that the God and Father of Jesus is excluded, as Paul states in 1 Corinthians 15:27. A study of this word all through the New Testament shows that, even when our translators add the word “things” to it, it rarely refers to absolutely “all” things in the whole universe, which would include the Most High Himself. It is always qualified by the context and common evidence. Although regarding Matthew 28:18, we can see from other scriptures that the “all power” that has been given to Jesus does include the subjection of all power in the whole created universe, but it does not include the Supreme Power of the Creator Himself.
http://studylight.org/lex/grk/view.cgi?number=3956

Trinitarians, likewise, like to refer to Matthew 28:18 as proof that Jesus is God, but, as yet, we have seen any explanation as to how this is claimed to support their position. Much that we have stated above also applies to the trinitarian arguments that this scripture offers proof of their trinitarian dogma.

It is often listed as proof that Jesus is alleged to be “omnipotent“. They seem to want Jesus to say: “I have all power in heaven and earth”, while ignoring that this power is given to Jesus. Some claim that the power is given from the Father to the Son, but, if this power is meant to prove that Jesus is God, or omnipotent, then the scripture would mean that one time, the Son was not God, and was not omnipotent, until this power was given to him. If they say that this power was given to Jesus as a man, and yet still use this scripture as proof that Jesus is God, then, in effect, they would be saying the human being Jesus became the God being. It would declare the flesh of Jesus as being the alleged “God nature” that they claim Jesus has.

In actuality, Jesus, in saying his words in Matthew 28:18, offers proof that Jesus is not his God, never has been his God, and never will be his God. Jesus is, and always will be, the Son of the Most High. He will never be the Most High of whom he is the son. — Genesis 14:22; Psalm 7:17; 83:18; 92:1; Luke 1:32; John 13:16.

While both trinitarian and “oneness” believers continue to present long lists of scriptures alleged to prove that Jesus is Yahweh, yet in reality, one has to assume, add to, and read that thought into all of the scriptures presented.

John 3:34 – For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for God gives the Spirit without measure.
John 3:35 – The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand.

John tells us that Jesus is the one whom God has sent and who speaks the words of God. This fulfills Deuteronomy 18:15-19; Jesus is the prophet of whom Yahweh says: “I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I shall command him.” (Deuteronomy 18:18) And Yahweh gives to Jesus the spirit without limit, so that Jesus can accomplish all the things that Yahweh has put into his hand. (Colossians 2:9,10)

That God has given “all things” into his hand does not mean that Jesus is or became his God who has put all things in his hand, since, as Paul says, “it is evident that he is excepted who subjected all things to him.” (1 Corinthians 15:27) Additionally, it should be apparent that if the “all things” spoken of here were put into the hands of Jesus, then Jesus did not have this authority/power of himself, but it is “given” to him, which shows that Jesus is not God Almighty. “Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Everything under the heavens is mine,” says Yahweh. (Job 41:11; Romans 11:35; see 1 Chronicles 29:11,12; John 10:29; 14:28) Thus through this, as well as many other scriptures, the holy spirit reveals that Jesus is not Yahweh.

One has stated: “If Jesus has the the spirit without measure of the only true God then he is immeasurably the only true God, as God is spirit.” This logic is from one who believes in some form of the “oneness” doctrine. From the oneness viewpoint, it evidently would suggest that there was a time when Jesus was not the only true God, and that thus, upon being giving unlimited spirit by his God, Jesus became his God who had given him this spirit. The trinitarian who would try to use this scripture to prove that Jesus is God runs into even greater difficulty, for such an application would have lead to the conclusion that the only true God gave to Himself that which he already had, which is nonsense. Additionally, if the trinitarian should argue that The Father gave this unlimited access to the human Jesus, as opposed to the alledged “God” Jesus, in an effort to try to prove the trinity, then one would be lead to conclude that the human Jesus was the God Jesus.

Regarding the first proposition, scripturally, Jesus is never depicted as becoming his God, nor his Father. The whole idea has to be read into the scriptures. Nor does Jesus’ being given unlimited access to God’s holy spirit mean that Jesus became his God who gave to him this unlimited access. It is claimed that our usage of unlimited access is really “limited”, evidently because we deny that this means that Jesus became his God. To us, unlimited does not mean limited. Our use of “unlimited” does not mean that we are placing limits upon the spirit that is given to Jesus by the only true God. Nevertheless, the thought seems to be that in some vague manner “without measure” means that Jesus received his Father’s spirit, and not only received it, but that he became all of his Father’s spirit, and thus he became the Father. Such an idea is not at all to be found in the Bible, however, except in the imaginations of those who read such into various scriptures. Without measure does not mean that Jesus became his own Father.

Regardless, the fact that the only true God has given to another His holy spirit without measure does not in any way mean that Jesus ever was, is, or that he will ever be, the only true God who has given to Jesus. All that is given to Jesus does not mean that Jesus becomes the One who has given all that has been given to Jesus. The being of the only true God is always excepted in all that is given to Jesus.
This in no wise places a limit upon Jesus’ access to his God’s holy spirit. — 1 Corinthians 15:27.

From the trinitarian standpoint, the very fact is that only true God would already have his holy spirit without measure, and would not need to be given the holy spirit at all. The very fact is that since Jesus was given this holy spirit by the only true God proves that Jesus is not the only true God who gave the holy spirit to him.
